Controls production - Overview

As described in the section mandate, EN-CV-CL is responsible for the production of the controls for the CV plants.

Since 2012 these controls are implemented with the CERN UNICOS application framework, in collaboration with the BE-ICS group.

Several CERN units are involved in the production of the CV control systems.

Workflow

The production of the control system is organised in several phases described in the EN-CV-CL control production workflow.

Roles and responsibilities

For the large majority of the produced controls, the roles and responsibilites are distributed as followed:

Role Responsibility People in charge
Control responsible
  • Liaison with the project responsible, if any
  • Links with the plant operator
  • Planning of the control tasks
  • Management of FAT and SAT
  • Quality of the deliverables
EN-CV-CL staff
Project responsible
  • Overall responsibility of the project for which a control is required.

Only applicable to new installations or installation with significatant upgrades

EN-CV-PJ staff
Plant operator
  • Operation of the plant
  • Maintenance of the pant
EN-CV-PSM, EN-CV-SPS,
EN-CV-LHC  or EN-CV-WMC staff
Control specifications writer
  • Requirements collection
  • Functional Analysis author
  • Controls HW architecture definition
EN-CV-CL staff
PLC code developer
  • Design of the PLC code
  • Coding of the PLC code
  • Initial unit tests
  • Support to the FAT and SAT
BE-ICS-AP staff
HMI synoptics configurator
  • Configuration of synoptics
  • Configuration of navigation
EN-CV-CL FSU
PVSS projects manager
  • Configuration of the PVSS set-up
  • Management of the PVSS HW hosts
BE-ICS-AP staff
Control FAT performer
  • Validation of the code on simulator vs Functional Analysis)
EN-CV-CL FSU
Control I/O SAT performer
  • Parametrisation of the control in situ
  • Validation of the remaining tests vs Functional Analysis

The effort required for each phase varies according to the phase of the project and to its size. To help the planning of the controls production, the effort required for the EN-CV-CL staff and FSUs have been evaluated for the typical projects and documented in the PDS template.

Remark: In some rare cases, the role of PLC developer is given to an EN-CV-CL staff or to the EN-CV-CL software maintenance contractor.
